Dressing the Part of a Magician

So, you’ve stocked your magic kit with a variety of magic tricks, practiced each trick to perfection, and you’re now ready to put on a show. Not so fast! Performing magic tricks is just that: a performance. As such, you’ll need to dress the part.

First, consider the type of magic tricks you will be performing. Obviously stage magic requires more costuming than street magic. For example, if you’ll be performing casual street magic tricks, you may want to look like an ordinary citizen rather than a magician. On the other hand, if you’re putting on a magic show, head to your local magic store or online magic shop and stock up on the basics such as: props, accessories, a magic hat, and a cape.

Next, consider the types of magic tricks you will be performing. If you’ll be doing tricks involving crystal balls and mental challenges, consider dressing up like a gypsy or a genie. If your tricks have an Egyptian theme, dress like an Egyptian or wear heavy eyeliner and Egyptian jewelry. The same is true if your magic act is centered on Chinese magic tricks, consider a Chinese jacket, gown, or ceremonial suit. If you’ll be performing on a stage, go for something glitzy that will be just as dazzling as the tricks themselves.

Another consideration is whether or not you will be playing a character. For example, imagine a comedy/magic act where a bag lady pulls off a variety of stunts, perhaps even making her shopping cart disappear. In this case, you’d want to dress the part of a bag lady.

Many magicians have a signature look, and this is also a smart idea. For example, the “Masked Magician” on the television show Magic’s Biggest Secrets dresses all in black and wears a distinctive mask.

No matter what type of magic tricks you’ll be performing, from street magic to stage magic, first impressions count. Make sure to dress the part.
